Feeling exhausted from the constant cycle of depression, she decided to take significant steps towards self-care. These steps ranged from setting personal boundaries to making lifestyle alterations that prioritized her well-being. After implementing these changes, Tara found herself feeling lighter and more at peace, leading her to start the Self-Care Suite in 2015. Her aim? To change the narrative around self-care for black women.
The Power of Community in Self-Care
During our conversation, Tara emphasized the pivotal role community plays in the practice of self-care. While her platform is named the Self Care Suite, she stressed the importance of communal care and learning how to practice self-care together.
The Self-Care Suite is a safe haven for women to exchange advice, tips, and techniques on wellness and self-care. The ultimate goal is to foster a community mindset, where everyone learns from each other and supports one another in their self-care journey.
Recognizing Our Humanity in the Face of Societal Pressures
One of the most profound discussions we had centered on the need for black women to recognize their humanity in the face of societal pressures. Tara pointed out that societal expectations often cause black women to lose sight of their humanity, leading them to function like machines.
However, just as machines require rest, so do we. We need to understand that even though we are capable of doing everything, it doesn’t necessarily mean we should. Recognizing our own humanity and limitations can help us set boundaries and prioritize our well-being.
Shifting the Self-Care Narrative for Black Women
Our conversation took a turn towards the popular narrative that black women rarely take time out for themselves. We explored the importance of embodying what self-care truly means and understanding that it extends beyond treating ourselves to a massage or a retreat. It’s about incorporating self-care into our lifestyle and making it a priority.
